The Idea Behind the Real Fungible Token
The Real Fungible Token began with a simple question.
What if ownership of a significant photograph could mean more than owning a print?
Photography has always had an original source. A negative, transparency or other physical master from which the image originates.
That master can carry the history of the photograph in a way no reproduction can.
A Real Fungible Token brings the photograph, its singular physical master, documented provenance and specifically defined rights together within one ownership structure.
The photograph remains the art.
What changes is what can be owned with it.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE OPPORTUNITY
Built by a Life in Commercial Photography
The Real Fungible Token was developed by Troy Burns after a lifetime working in commercial photography.
Together, Troy and Karen Burns built Karen Images and Metro Productions around the creation, ownership and commercial use of photography. Over decades, that work produced not only photographs, but an extensive physical archive of original negatives and transparencies.
That experience created an unusual perspective.
They understood the value of the finished photograph. They understood the value of copyright and licensing. And they understood that behind many photographs exists something else entirely: the original physical master from which the image originated.
A print can be reproduced.
A negative can be duplicated.
But only one is the original photographic negative exposed in the camera.
The Real Fungible Token grew from recognizing that distinction and asking whether the original physical master could become a meaningful part of ownership rather than simply remaining in the photographer's archive.
The result is an evolving model designed to connect the photograph, its original physical master, its provenance and specifically defined rights within a documented ownership structure.
WHAT COMES NEXT
An Idea Meant to Be Used
The Real Fungible Token was not created simply to organize one photographic archive. It was developed as a model that other photographers, artists, collectors and art professionals can examine, question and ultimately put to use.
The first Real Fungible Tokens provide a working record of how the concept has evolved.
Each one helps define how an original photographic master, documented provenance, specifically defined rights and a continuing record of ownership can exist together.
The model will continue to develop as creators and art professionals encounter circumstances we have not yet considered.
That is part of the purpose.
RealFungibleToken.org exists to document the concept, preserve its history and provide a place where the model can continue to evolve.
The idea began with photography.
Where it goes from here will be determined by the people who find a meaningful use for it.
